The Other “I Do” – Deciding on a Wedding Dress (The Ultimate Guide)

Deciding on a wedding dress can be one of the most exciting parts of the wedding planning process. After gleefully answering The Big Question, you may find your mind zip to that inescapable place – “Oh my GOD what am I gonna wear?” Here is the simplest guide to different wedding dress styles to discover what you connect to most. I’m going to steer away from talking about what’s “flattering” because here we believe the bride should wear whatever makes her feel most comfortable, confident and sexy!

Let’s Start With Styles

Every bride without an idea of what they want will walk into a bridal shop with taffeta, chiffon and lace thrown in their direction in every bodice possible and may leave feeling even more confused. On top of that, people who work in dress shops often work on commission, meaning they will be eager to take advantage of someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Take some time to get comfortable talking about different styles of dresses and what kinds you like more than others. Going from head-to-toe, start with the neckline and work your way down to make the combination that will be perfect for you.

Necklines

Okay, so be real with yourself: Are you busty and run the risk of a clothing ‘malfunction’? Do you love your collarbones? Do you want to stand our with a high-neckline? The most popular styles are often the sweetheart, V-neck, queen anne and the off the shoulder. Maybe that makes you feel more connected to them, maybe it does the opposite. It’s all up to you. On top of that, think about the kind of veil that interests you (if at all). More brides are going with floral headbands, tiaras and crystal head-pieces instead – this adds a touch of flare (and of you) to any ensemble.

Silhouettes

Now for the fun part, the silhouette. Are you proud of your booty? Then flaunt it in a mermaid dress! Do you want to feel like a princess? Then ballgown is the way to go. All of these can be laden with lace if you’re going for an antique look or like the flirty feel of it. Get comfortable describing the shapes you find most intriguing, and whether or not you want some razzle-dazzle added in beading or crystals.

Shopping Time!

Alright so you’ve studied the styles, decided on a budget, picked some favorites, stalked our Dress Inspiration Pin-board,  and now you’re ready to walk full speed ahead into Anne Jean-Michel, Oui Je Le Vouex or some other store with gorgeous gowns calling your name from the window. Take your time. The right dress will come to you, not the other way around. As you walk stay focused on the styles that you’ve decided on, remember you chose them for a reason. Unless a gown is singing to you from across the room, stay on task. Don’t forget you’re in a room literally surrounded by gorgeous things that may entice you from your main mission. Keep your eyes on the prize – you got this.

The ONLY Time You Should Keep Looking

The number one rule of wedding dress shopping: don’t keep looking. The only time you should endanger your dress’s well-being by comparing it to so many others is if you felt pressured by those you went shopping with to buy it. Maybe you have a nagging feeling about the other dress you were thinking about, but decided to trust someone else’s opinion. Then, and only then should you return to the store and smother yourself in silk until you’re positive.

Here are some examples from brides whose dresses we’ve loved shooting!
